If youβre ordering overalls online (especially for the first time), you might have questions about how to size overalls or be on the lookout for an overalls size chart.
Finding your size in overalls can be tricky, but this overview should give you all the information you need to find the right size for you and avoid having to order multiple sizes and sending some back (itβs a pain, we get it!).
How to size overalls
How you find the right size will depend on whether youβre looking for menβs overalls or womenβs overalls. For men, it also depends on whether you need denim overalls or insulated bib overalls, as these are sized differently.
Letβs start with the ladies.
Sizing womenβs overalls
The first thing to bear in mind is that overalls in general run larger than regular clothes. This is because youβll generally be wearing your regular clothes under your overalls, so they need to have extra room to accommodate any layers you already have on.
Also, as overalls tend to be measured differently by different manufacturers, the best thing to do is to know your own measurements.
If youβre unsure of your size, use a soft tape measure to measure your bust, waist, hips, and inseam, as shown on this diagram:
Once you have your measurements and youβve started your search for a new pair of insulated bib overalls, look for an overalls size chart. Check your measurements against the chart, and youβll be able to find the size you need. Hereβs an example of a KEY overalls size chart for women:
If you measure between sizes, go for the next size up so you can be sure that your overalls will fit comfortably over your regular clothes. If youβre short or tall in height, youβll need to look for the right leg length, too. At KEY, for example, you can buy womenβs overalls in short, regular, and tall, which is why itβs important to know your inseam measurement.
Note that at KEY, we measure our overalls right to the outer edges, and we include extra room for your regular clothes in our measurements.
Youβll also find that thereβs a difference between sizing for denim overalls and for insulated overalls. Denim overalls come in standard clothing sizes, while insulated bibs are sized small, medium, large, etc. Another reason itβs important to know your exact measurements!
Sizing menβs overalls - insulated bibs
Sizing menβs overalls is pretty similar to sizing womenβs overalls. Again, youβre looking for a larger size than normal so your overalls will fit over your regular clothes.
To get the right size in menβs overalls, measure your chest, waist, and inseam, as shown below, with a flexible tape measure:
We recommend taking your measurements over the underclothes youβd normally wear. When you measure your waist, bend back and forth to locate your natural curves and measure across the widest part. A big misconception is that your waist size in pants is the same as bibs. For example, if you normally wear your pants below the belly, the waist size will be a smaller number than youβll need for bibs. The bibs have to go around the belly, so the widest area around your waist is what you need to measure.
You can either measure the inside of your leg or a pair of pants you already own to get your correct inseam.
When youβve taken your measurements and found the perfect pair of overalls, check out the overalls size chart and compare it to your measurements to find the size you need. Youβll typically find a size chart like this on most websites selling menβs overalls:
If youβre particularly short or tall, look for overalls that come in different lengths. At KEY, for example, you can buy menβs overalls in short, regular, tall, and extra tall.
As with womenβs sizes, if you measure between sizes, go for a size up so you can be sure that your overalls will fit comfortably over your regular clothes. We measure menβs overalls right to the outer edges, and include extra room for your regular clothes in our measurements.
Sizing menβs denim overalls
Menβs denim overalls are sized slightly differently to insulated bib overalls at KEY. As you can see from the table below, theyβre sized numerically rather than small, medium, large, etc.
This gives you a really accurate idea of the size youβll need, and donβt forget that if youβre between sizes, youβll need to size up rather than down to ensure a comfortable fit - but order the size that matches your usual pant inseam.
Shrinkage after washing overalls
If youβre worried about how to size your overalls and then what will happen after you wash them, never fear.
When you buy KEY overalls, shrinkage is very minor and we allow for it in our measurements. That means your overalls will still be the right size for you, no matter how many times you wash them, as long as theyβre laundered according to care label instructions.
